PROJECT

‘The Nida project’ was the first workshop of the ‘International design action’ workshop series. ‘The Nida Project’ was an exchange between alumni of Design Academy Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and students, graduates of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Lithuania.

The focus was to research historical, social and cultural layers of the Lithuanian seaside embankment of Nida, Neringa located on the Curonian Spit between the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. After gathering to four groups each one developed a project based on a clear concept exchanging teachings of the two academies and two different design cultures.

The result “Directed Reflections” grew into a continued independent group exploration due to a grant from the Lithuanian Council for culture. The group was able to gather a year later after the initial workshop and continue developing the project.

TASK

The main focus wandered away from the context of Nida and shifted towards a more thorough experimentation with the material and scale.

The simple an innocent idea of spending enjoyable holidays in a place like Nida opens up immense historical, social and cultural layers. Two powers, intuition of nature and intelligence of the mind are in constant interaction (action/reaction/action/reaction).
The exploration of these interactions and their historical and contemporary impact allows us to rediscover time, place and material.

Simple objects, experiments, structures made of MDF, a wooden composite material made by man, are modified by hot water, deformed by structure and additional elements.
